The Connections Club is building-based and takes place at the DeWolf Innovation Center. Our volunteers host a group of adults living with earlier-stage dementia, leading them through engaging activities and providing an opportunity to make meaningful connections while their caregivers receive respite. Lunch is provided.
Community-based connections take place at public venues, such as libraries and museums. This program is part of our ongoing effort to partner with organizations, train volunteers and create more dementia-friendly spaces throughout our community. Visits are coordinated by volunteers. Please refer to our event calendar to learn more about community-based connections and various adaptations for people living with dementia.
The church-based Connections program was first launched in 2019 by Tom and Cindi McKee, members of St. Paul’s Methodist in Cedar Rapids. Working with the Family Caregivers Center, the McKees established this volunteer-led ministry to provide activities and social opportunities for adults living with earlier-stage dementia. Caregivers can also use this time for respite.
Participants meet once a week at St. Paul’s to socialize, do activities, and enjoy a home-cooked meal together. Everything is coordinated and provided by church volunteers, offering a rewarding experience filled with purpose and meaning.
If your congregation is interested in hosting a Connections program at your church, please reach out to Melissa McClure at mmcclure@mercycare.org.
